Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke about the wildfire situation in British Columbia on Friday after visiting the West Kelowna fire hall. Trudeau was also asked about the community of Shuswap where some residents say they feel abandoned.

"People are really scared and there's lots of reasons to be scared. Anything residents and communities can do to facilitate the work that firefighters are doing as they're trying to get in and protect communities and protect homes is really important. We need to make sure that we're allowing the first responders to do the jobs they have of keeping the rest of us safe," Trudeau said.

Some residents of Shuswap say they've taken it upon themselves to protect their community, coming together and working in shifts, but some of those residents say they're been treated like criminals by the RCMP who are alleging that people are not abiding by the rules.

In a Wednesday video, CSRD deputy regional fire chief Sean Coubrough had implored a “small percentage of the population” to be more compassionate toward firefighters, particularly those controlling the flow of traffic around the evacuation area.
